At the bottom 36 William Street
there was a small single storey garage. Thankfully for all concerned it could also be
accessed from a small lane that ran parallel with Glenford Park. This however was not your
ordinary run of the mill building as it provided many people with many things. I am
putting together a few of my events that happened in and around the garage and also the
people involved in them. What started life as an empty building soon became a hive of
activity. The words Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll spring to mind and there was also huge
amounts of alcohol consumed. Everybody who frequented the garage brought with them various
skills and soon light, music and television were installed. There were of course times
when the greater plan failed, John "Lofty" o'Lone had offered his services as
the resident electrician but when he earthed a fluorescent light to a wooden beam alarm
bells sounded and he was removed from that job. It could never be described as being dull
as people arrived at all times of the day and night. Although most of us had motorcycles
everyone was made welcome, The alchopop had not yet been invented so anything that
resembled drink was acceptable. It was common practice that at the start of a session a
five glass bottle of Drawbridge was downed in one go. Derek added that touch of class to
our little gatherings by providing us with a cocktail shaker, it took the form of a baby
bath. Many people fell victim to these toxic mixtures it was the sort of drink that crept
up behind you before punching your lamps out. Brian Black found out the hard way, he was
there one minute, drinking large amounts from his plastic cup and gone the next. He
returned some time later with his eyes looking at each other and was as black as your
boot, to this day he has no idea where he had gone so from that time on he was Blackey.
Billy Klauson from East Belfast was another to be afflicted, "I'm just going outside
for a crap ". Some time later he was discovered at the side of the garage and on
closer inspection was found to be out for the count. He had obviously loosened his
trousers and crouched down, the cold air and drink must have hit him as he fell forward
onto his forehead. His position brought the house down as his big white bare rear end was
sticking up in the air and a spider had carefully woven its web between his cheeks. He had
to be lifted back indoors it that position and allowed to thaw out.
Webmaster Comment,.. Every
word is true, I was there, the "Baby bath" was there for all those who had a job
or some sort of income to donate to those who did'nt,. you would enter with your own
choice plus a donation,. the donation could be, gin, guinness, whiskey, cider etc,.
as Stewart says, it was lethal,. ask Maurice Orr,. we took him home, propped him
against his front door, rang the bell and legged it....
we were not particular and would get plastered with anybody.
